International Women in Engineering Week – Chelsea Whitehead

This weekend it is International Women in Engineering Day 2018. To celebrate the event, the achievements of women in engineering, Advance FM wants to share the stories of our staff members. Today, Junior Estimator, Chelsea Whitehead, shares her experience of working in Facilities Maintenance.

“Hi, I’m Chelsea Whitehead and I am a junior estimator at Advance FM. Before my current role at Advance FM, I worked as a Service Desk Coordinator within a high access equipment, maintenance company. I enjoyed working within this type of industry but wanted to progress and learn/gain more experience being more involved and out on site. My expectations of working within the industry was to gain the knowledge I was looking for within a team but also being able to handle my workload on my own accord.

I was expecting to be out on site a lot more than I had originally been at my previous job to really understand the quoting and sourcing side of things and to help engage in what the engineers do on a day to day basis when we send them on jobs.

Alongside my role at Advance FM, I am also studying for a Level 3 Surveying Apprenticeship. I am enjoying my course a lot as not only am I gaining practical experience on site, I am also gaining a qualification in many parts of the quantity surveying industry. I have gained distinctions the whole way through my course and thrive to do so until it comes to an end. I enjoy attending college and learning new things, being able to study and putting my all into my course and assignments.

I enjoy working within Facilities Management as no two days are the same. We have different departments dealing with different trades meaning that all quotes I attend and cost are very rarely similar. Attending sites gets me out and about, learning new things and meeting new people.”
