Works required:

We were called to advise and cost for works to the Lower Elliot pond area where a main sewer from the student accommodation was in danger of rupturing.

This area and its ponds were part of the main breading area for the endangered species of Great crested newt with the UK. The pond was monitored and surveyed by the DICE (Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology); this is the leading authority on the subject and based at the University.

The pipe if ruptured would have decimated the entire population of Great crested newts.

There were numerous issues relating to the works including the fragile nature of the pipeline and also that line was encased in concrete. The works being within the breeding area was exasperated as we were very close to the main breeding time.

In conjunction with a leading Ecological survey team we put a plan of action together, which was certified and approved.

Scope Of Works:

  • To attend site and set up a site area within the designated area
  • To carry out a daily search in conjunction with ecological survey team of any works area
  • To carry out the installation of temporary over pumping diesel pumps, to allow by-pass of the area
  • To clean down and wash through line
  • To seal and isolate both sections of pipeline
  • To breakout all the concrete covering ensuring searches are carried out prior to works
  • To remove in sections all pipe
  • To remove all waste following a detailed hand search of the area
  • To level of a base for pipework
  • To install Gabon baskets along the level base
  • Install a base of Gabon stone
  • Install a new 225mm plastic pipeline
  • Install sealed gaskets to each connection for added safety
  • Test pipeline with fresh water
  • Fill Gabon baskets to top and seal
  • Excavate and replace with double sealed Heavy duty manhole cover at edge of forest
  • Using spoil from site pack Gabon baskets with mud to create a natural breeding area for newts
  • Remove all plant and waste from site
  • Carry out a further Ecological survey and issue a report to DICE on completion


On completion not only did we alleviate the issues facing the University and the pond but also left the area with a new eco system designed and built using Gabon baskets, which benefitted not only the Pond and local environment but other departments on site.
